Community Orders

When a young offender receives a community based Order imposed by a local Youth or Magistrates Court (or by a Crown Court in serious cases) this Order is supervised by the Kirklees Youth Offending Team.

The level of supervision depends on the type of Order the Court imposes, and on the level of assessed risk in each case.  Supervision can range from weekly contact to prolonged daily contact for up to five hours a day.  Daily supervision is provided as an Intensive Supervision and Surveillance requirement of a Youth Rehabilitation Order and is for high risk, persistent, prolific and serious offenders

Our supervision of a Court Order starts with a comprehensive assessment (ASSET) of the young person’s needs and risks. Further assessment of serious risk issues may be undertaken, or of problems with substance misuse, education or other issues, as needed. Based on this assessment, we then agree a written “intervention plan” with the young person and their parent/carers to help them stay out of trouble.

Where required we also provide specialist support during Supervision of Court Orders, including Emotional and Mental Health, Education, Training & Employment, Housing, Substance Misuse and Restorative Justice

Kirklees Youth Offending Team also offers support to parents, including voluntarily agreed interventions and intensive Parenting Programmes by order of the court.

Sentence Trouble
At least 60% of young people in the youth justice system have communication needs. That could mean that over half of the young people you work with do not understand what people say to them or find it difficult to get their message across.  The Communication Trust website at -

  • Find out what communication needs are

  • View examples of what these needs may look like
