Families and Carers > Parenting Support
Currently at the youth
offending team, our support service includes
offering a one to one support to the parents we
engage with by meeting them at home on a visit or
inviting them down to the YOT office when
appropriate. The intervention involves working
closely with families by providing skills developing
resources which can be aimed at supporting parents
to deal with issues around communication, boundaries
and negotiations, anger management, truancy and
issues around substance misuse.
Moreover, because families needs are sometimes
complex, we endeavour to refer or signpost families
to partner agencies that may be more suitable to
assist the family with the issues presented.
In 2008 the YOT at Kirklees felt that the parenting
provision should be brought in house It was felt
that we could provide a more targeted service to our
parents by having two part time workers who were
supported by advanced practitioners. Working with
parents requires a specialist approach that engages
parents of young people who offend. Often there is a
good deal of stigma around parents ability to manage
their children when they offend.
Our workers will always make every effort to work
along side them to look at ways of managing their
children's behaviour. To this end we have a wide
range of resources available to parents.
The three tier approach allows us to have a targeted
intervention that is tailored to the needs of
individuals.

The two part time YOT parenting workers are based in
Dewsbury and Huddersfield offices. They are
supported by two Advanced Practitioners who between
them are responsible for the delivery of all
parenting work in the YOT. There is a three tier
approach to the work where parents receive a
service.
