The YOT continues to work hard towards achieving the National Indicators agreed regionally in collaboration with the YJB  and which are set for a period of 3 years.  Indeed Kirklees compares favourably with the other West Yorkshire areas.

Kirklees Youth Offending Team have developed strategies and put systems in place for early identification, and to address the Education Training and Employment Needs of all the young people who come to the attention of the YOT.

YOT officers are supported by a specialist team of workers to assess the individual  ETE needs of the young people to ensure that their ETE needs are appropriately met.

Specialist workers include: Two Advanced Practitioners and one ISSP project worker  with specific responsibility for Education. In addition there are also two ‘Connexion’ Career Advisors.

Plan

  • The Advanced Practitioners work both strategically and in relation to individual cases to integrate young offenders into full time mainstream education in line with the Education Authority’s Inclusion Policy.

  • Maintain good relationships with Kirklees mainstream schools and strong links with Kirklees Key Stage Services and support services. This enables speedy joint working to address issues of engagement with hard to reach young people.
  • Continued involvement in the further development of Connexions services, particularly around the provision of basic skills.
  • To maximise opportunities of additional funding to enable young people to achieve in specific areas of learning.
  • Ensure that the Youth Crime Prevention Strategy prioritises schools as safe and secure environments, reducing bullying and anti social behaviour
  • To continue to improve links between ETE and the Secure Estate.
  • To improve the basic skills provision available to the YOT.
  • To ensure the involvement of the YOT Advanced Practitioners in the prevention agenda in schools.
  • Early identification of previously missed / unacknowledged learning difficulties amongst young people through referral to specialist learning disabilities nurse and fast track access to Education Psychologist assessment.
  • Advanced Practitioners are liaising with other YOT’s within our family groups both regionally and nationally where good practice and performance is evidenced in order that we can learn from them and report back to Management Board.
  • Further develop ETE Practice and Performance Group.
  • Advanced Practitioners to have access to Kirklees SYNERGY Data base.
