Restorative Justice and Victims > Reparation
What
is Reparation?
Reparation is a practical way for a young person to
make amends for something they have done wrong.
Reparation can be done either directly for the
victim or indirectly for the community. For
examples of some of the reparation young people do
or have done click here
or
see our blog.
What are the benefits of reparation?
-
It can provide a direct service to the victim redressing the harm/damage caused
-
It provides visible evidence and improvement to the community & builds public confidence
-
It helps to prevent re-offending
What
should reparation be?
To make community reparation a true way of making
amends, it should:
-
Be linked, whenever possible, to the wishes of the victim
-
Be motivated by a desire to make amends
-
Be meaningful to the young person, enabling them to see an end result and take pride in what they have done
-
Be appropriate to the young person
-
Be relevant to the offence
-
Be outside of school hours
-
Be varied
